Sustainable Wood
Consistent with our Purpose, we are remodeling and retrofitting Inn Serendipity Woods with many of the same sustainable and energy efficient technologies used at Inn Serendipity Bed & Breakfast.
Woodstove for Heat & Energy-efficient Lighting
In addition to energy efficient compact flourescent lighting, we've added a Lopi Revere woodstove liner for more efficient heating without the use of fossil fuels and renovated the hallway and living room floor using FSC-certified sustainably harvested elm from the Sustainable Woods Cooperative.
Completely Powered by the Sun
A 2.28 kW photovoltaic system was completed in 2011, allowing the business to generate a surplus of electricity from the sun on an annual basis.
Hot Water Heated by the Sun
A 4-collector active solar hot water heating system (for domestic hot water) was added, facing southeast. The system provides more hot water for guests when they shower, indoors or outside. The system was designed by Phil and Judy Welty, former owners of Solar Use Now of Wisconsin. An on-demand (instantaneous) hot water heater replaced an old electric hot water heater.
Swimming Platform made from Recycled Milk Jugs
An old rickety dock was replaced by a swimming platform built with TREX recycled plastic dimensional lumber. The swimming platform in the 1 acre pond is available for use by guests during the summer months.
The old dock was hauled ashore and repurposed as a small deck from which you can cast a fishing line for bluegill or smallmouth bass.
To conserve resources and minimize impacts, recycling is encouraged and a bin provided in the kitchen for such purposes. A compost pile is adjacent to the garage for food scraps.
